EM (Erasmus Magazine) is the independent journalistic platform of Erasmus University. We create engaging, fun, and critical stories about the university, education and science, and student life in Rotterdam. Our content includes text, photos, videos, illustrations, and audio, catering to all students and staff at the university. The editorial team comprises professional journalists working alongside students to produce journalistic content. We are looking for aspiring reporters to join our team in the upcoming academic year.

What will you do?

  • Interview students and staff
  • Approach strangers with various interview questions
  • Create reports of events and gatherings
  • Investigate news and check sources
  • Come up with news leads and ideas
  • Contribute to brainstorming on angles and storytelling formats
  • Write news articles, interviews, reports, and feature stories
  • Receive guidance from professional journalists

What do we expect from you?

  • A nose for news and keen observational skills
  • Confidence in approaching strangers
  • A penchant for asking questions
  • An ability to listen to answers attentively
  • Clear and open communication
  • An affinity for student life, education, and science, with knowledge of the university's layout
  • The ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Adherence to deadlines and receptiveness to feedback
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English is preferred, but fluency in at least one is required
  • You are enrolled at Erasmus University

While prior journalistic experience is a plus, it is not essential. What matters most is your journalistic ambition, enthusiasm, and talent. We also expect you to be available throughout the entire 2024-2025 academic year to contribute at least one article per month and work two hours a week at the editorial office.

What we offer:

A stimulating part-time job where you can gain experience and explore whether a career in journalism is right for you. We offer payment for your work at EM. You will receive guidance from professional journalists and join a lively, diverse, engaged, and sharp-witted team. Additionally, we organise several crash courses on journalistic skills throughout the year, and there is a monthly social gathering.

Interested?

Send an email to [email protected] by 23 June including:

  • A maximum of 150 words on why you think you are suitable for the job
  • A short CV (max one A4 page) detailing any relevant writing or journalistic experience
  • Relevant work (articles, interviews, reports) as attachments or links
  • Your name, study programme, year, and phone number

Based on these applications, we will invite some candidates for an interview and a trial assignment. Address your email to Wieneke Gunneweg, editor-in-chief of EM. For any questions about the vacancy, contact the editorial team at the same email address. Interviews will take place in the first week of July.
