Bayer's Vegetable Quality Laboratory (VQL) in Bergschenhoek, The Netherlands, is part of the Global Consumer R&D team. The Dutch VQL is responsible for analysis of consumer relevant traits associated with flavour, appearance, and shelf-life of fruits & vegetables. This work enables data-based selections and advancement decisions at all stages of the product development pipelines across the EMEA region. At more advanced stages the selected products are submitted to comparative consumer sensory studies. Sensory work is needed to collect insights on liking and preference of final users, and development of predictive consumer liking models, to be used for data interpretation in earlier stages.

The Consumer Sensory Specialist (Lab Ops & Sensory Specialist is the official Bayer job title) will translate practical business questions into tailored made research projects. He/she will be responsible for alignment of such needs, the organisation & planning of the work, and all the logistics involved in harvest and shipment of fruits and vegetables to the site of action. Since the outcome of sensory studies has a strong cultural component, these studies are conducted at a global scale, using external, regional, vendors specialized in the topic. The Dutch VQL also counts with an in-house sensory facility that can be used for quick insights and exploratory work.

The Consumer Sensory Specialist will handle all required communication with internal stakeholders and external sensory vendors involved in the process. He/she enjoys working independently, contributing with innovative ideas to improve research and product evaluation. The position implies a mix of research, data analysis & visualization and writing final reports in agreement with he needs of our stakeholders. He/she will also assist the VQL team with analytics of visual, textural, and compositional traits associated with flavour and appearance. The combination of lab phenotyping and consumer data can be used for development of predictive liking models. He/she should count with occasional travel for meetings with stakeholders, and participation in congresses, fairs, and events. You will be part of a global team so you need to be flexible to work in different time zones.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Establish and maintain contacts with all relevant stakeholders.
• Interact with external sensory vendors for planning, set-up, cost, and questionnaires.
• Translate consumer insights collected by other teams into meaningful sensory studies.
• Planification of the work, coordination of logistics involved and proper execution of the work.
• Ensure availability of fresh produce needed for sensory and consumer testing.
• Organize shipment/transport of the samples to the site of action, and completion of paperwork involved.
• Preparation of samples for consumer sensory and parallel lab phenotyping.
• Statistical analysis of sensory data, and combine with relevant lab data collected for the stakeholder.
• Writing quality reports and presentations to create insights for stakeholders & projects.
• Autonomous operations of research activities conducted in our in-house Sensory facility.
• Ensure proper hygiene and safety protocols are always followed.
• Ability to plan & execute research activities in our in-house sensory facility autonomously.
• Become the "Sensory face" of Bayer Vegetables.

WHO YOU ARE

• MSc or BSc education in Sensory Science (f.i. Consumer Studies, Food (Commerce and Technology, Food Science).
• At least two years' experience in consumer sensory sciences in a similar role
• Proficient in MS Office.
• Advanced user of EyeQuestion.
• Advanced Excel skills (including formulas, statistical analysis, etc.)
• Ability to safely lift a max of 15 kilos.
• Driver's licence and ability to travel to different Bayer locations (pool car available).
• Fluent in English and Dutch, both verbal and written - additional language skills are an advantage.
• Eager to learn, resourceful and adaptive.
• Excited by helping to build the foundation necessary for fluent interactions with stakeholders.
• Ability to provide a tailored job.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
• Ability to travel and operate alone while at it.
• Assist with overall operations of the Vegetable Quality lab.
• Team player.
• Flexible to travel (occassionally).
